Historical notes

One place, many eras.

Le Stanze stand along the line of the first medieval city walls, in an area that was once the heart of Pistoia’s craftsmanship, famous for leatherworking. Here stood Santa Maria in Torre, an ancient watchtower later turned into a church and, over the centuries, flanked by a monastery dedicated in the sixteenth century to San Niccolò.

In the eighteenth century the church was deconsecrated and the building became the seat of the Accademia degli Armonici, a circle of the Pistoian nobility and a centre of cultural and social life. In the 1920s and 1930s the Sala dei Pesci, in the basement, was turned into a theatre, with the marine frescoes that still decorate it. After decades of varied commercial and cultural uses, a careful restoration has given the palace back its splendour, ready to welcome new events.
